Starlink Maritime is not a separate piece of hardware but Starlink's Global Priority plans used at sea. In Germany they cost from €250 a month for 50 GB to €2,150 for 2 TB. At sea, only Global Priority and Roam Unlimited with ocean mode work, and Starlink recommends its Performance antenna for boats.

Everything in this article comes from Starlink's own pages and data sheets as of 4 October 2026. We found no official regulator source on using Starlink on yachts, so the rules below are Starlink's description, not a law.

Which Starlink plans work at sea?

  • Starlink Maritime means using the Global Priority business plans at sea, from merchant ships to yachts (Starlink).
  • At sea, only Global Priority and Roam Unlimited with ocean mode can be used. Local Priority is meant for land, lakes and rivers only (Starlink).
  • Marinas, coasts and inland waters count as sea on Starlink's map, but service is available there while stationary (Starlink).
  • Ocean mode is needed beyond 12 nautical miles. It also lifts the limit for territorial waters of 5 consecutive days or 60 days a year (Starlink).

What does Starlink cost on a yacht?

Global Priority, region Germany, per month (Starlink business plans):

DataPrice
50 GB€250
500 GB€650
1 TB€1,150
2 TB€2,150
  • Extra data: +50 GB for €100, +500 GB for €500 a month. After the priority data is used up, you keep unlimited data at up to 1 Mbit/s download and 0.5 Mbit/s upload, with a service level agreement (Starlink; Starlink Maritime).
  • In the US, the same plans cost the same figures in dollars (Starlink US).
  • Roam in Germany: 100 GB for €45, Unlimited for €95 a month. Roam Unlimited can be used for up to 30 days at a time outside the home country (Starlink).
  • Ocean mode on Roam Unlimited costs US$6 per GB since 27 September 2026 (US$2 before); for private maritime use also US$6 per GB (Starlink).
  • Contracts are monthly, with a 30-day trial and full refund (Starlink Business).

We could not find a published price for the Performance hardware kit: Starlink only shows it in the ordering process after entering an address.

Which antenna does Starlink recommend for boats?

Starlink recommends the Performance antenna (or Performance Gen 2) for boats because of its wider field of view. Standard antennas are possible; other models are not supported in motion, and their warranty may be void (Starlink, boats).

From the Performance data sheet:

  • Over 400 Mbit/s download today; gigabit plans announced for 2026 without changing the hardware
  • Electronic phased array, 140° field of view, 5.2 kg, 609 × 396 × 40 mm, IP68/IP69K, −40 to +60 °C
  • Average power draw 75–100 W
  • Rated for wind over 270 km/h and submersion to 1 m for 30 minutes
  • In the box: antenna, power supply for 100–240 V AC and 12–56 V DC, 25 m antenna cable, 5 m Ethernet cable
  • Aluminium housing, 3-year warranty, designed for a 10-year life (Starlink Business)

How should Starlink be installed on a yacht?

Starlink's installation advice for boats (Starlink, boats):

  • A clear 360° view from 20° above the horizon. In marinas, mount higher if needed, on a mast or pole.
  • Mounts are tilted 8° at the factory so water drains; secure screws with removable thread locker.
  • Cable from antenna to power supply at most 25 m, total run to the device at most 100 m, bend radius at least 5 cm.
  • On DC power, use a pure sine wave inverter of at least 500 W and a UPS.
  • With several antennas on board, keep at least 3 m between mount centres; a third-party router can combine them for load balancing and failover.

Are there legal limits?

Starlink says maritime service should only be used in territorial waters where SpaceX or the user holds a licence (Starlink). We found no regulator's page confirming flag or port rules for yachts.
